OK.

100% I’m in a debate whether a Cayman S or a Lotus Elise is my obtainable future dream car. I think the Cayman would be much more practical/cheaper but damn would a Lotus be more fun and special. I can't help but smile when I see a Lotus driving down the street around here.

It's probably a bad idea. Do it.

Theres one at a really sketchy dealer near my old office and I’m tempted to see if it’s legit.
On the other hand I may be too short to drive one and I bet they’d let me find out...

I love them. I’ve looked at Caymans too but it’s just not quite there. I haven’t sat in a Lotus yet though and an ex-boyfriend said I couldn’t reach the pedals so I’m trying not to get too attached to the idea.

Well, Marshall Goldman is definitely not a sketchy dealer, and it’s definitely a legit Lotus. I’ve seen it in person. It’s not perfect ; the battery tender wires need hidden (visible in photos) and I think that’s the one where the clear bra could use replacing.
Driving position in these is actually pretty good. I was able to get fairly comfortable. And I tend to be way the hell up there. (Makes it easier on my bad shoulder.) But man, these are not daily drivers.

Oh, I wasn’t saying they are! Just that the sketchy one here is a good chance to see if I could actually drive one or if this is a pipe dream.

I've gotta try sitting in an Elise too. But driving a regular Cayman sold me on the idea that I had to have one some day. I'm sure the S would be even more fun. It's pretty much the only car I've driven that felt as fun as my Miata in the pure joy department. Finding a Lotus of some sort to drive for a turo rental or something is high on the priority list! Aftermarket pedals and/or seats can definitely help, I'm sure there's plenty of solutions for the vertically impaired haha.

Yeah, at least I’m probably only a little shorter than the intended market - at least I’m not 5’1” or something.

Fukkit, go drive it. My Porsche dealer let me take a 991 Turbo out for a spin because it was the closest they had at the time. No excuse for sketchy place to not let you joyride a Toyota motor.

I do, too.
As long as it wasn’t modified in some horrendous way or wrecked, it’s unlikely that you could go wrong here. I mean, even with high mileage there’s only so much you might need to replace, they’re so simple...

My wife fit, she is 5'4 and it was her favorite car to date.

Mid 2000s Cayman S are around $26-28k in the Midwest now. I quite fancy it as my next car.
Elises are like 40k-ish :(
If you dont mind wrenching, the 2ZZ is a direct bolt on into the MR2 spyder. That is essentially the same as an Elsie.

I’m sure the Cayman is the better car in most ways, but the Elise will turn heads in a way a Cayman or even a 911 won’t. In order to match the “exoticness” of the Elise with a Porsche , you’d need a 918 or Carr era GT or something.

Have you driven a mid 2000s Cayman S? They are cheaper than an Elise ($25k vs $40k) and are extremely fun.
The flat 6 sound, thr steering feel, the handling <3

I’ve not owned one, but I know two who have, including one who had the Toyota engine replaced with a Honda Type-R. Great cars, amazing fun to drive.
My advice would be j ust as long as it’s not your primary car I think you will be fine. I would not buy it if it had to also be your daily driver. Neither of the people I know who owned them would do it as their only car, just to much compromise for a daily.
Great as a weekend warrior car.

Then report back here on Oppo. That way we can live vicariously. :p

I would love one of those too.
Short is probably easier to overcome than tall with small cars. Go try it out. You may be pleasantly surprised.

The Elise is tiny , you would fit fine.

But they’re so boooooooring looking.
And you can definitely get an Elise for less than $40k.

Thats like your opinion :) The flat 6 howl is just too enticing for me tho
I haven't seen any cheapo Elises yet...

If you’re too short to drive an Elise, what car can you even drive?

This. My 4C was also bad idea, as was the F355, and the Cayman before that. I’m not learning my lesson.
![]() 08/18/2018 at 13:16 |

Do you think a 4C could possibly be in your budget? If so, check that out too. It’s roomier than an Elise, if that’s of any value to you.
I’ve written a fair bit about mine here.

Hey it’s not proven yet. Just what I was told.

The Elise might be better on maintenance if they have the Toyota motor in the USA. Porsches get expensive with maintenance.

That was exactly my thoughts too

I’m pretty sure Colin Chapman was 5'7" So I’m sure you would have enough adjustment to get the pedals. IF not, get some Frankenstein shoes and you’re good to go!
